This is architecture moving away from the tradition of International Style and privileges the experiential qualities of individual buildingsA sensation in every possible way, this architecture is designed to be in the contemporary times, with a playful and eye-catching designThe concept is clear, bold and simple, yet also precise, and its glory lies in the perfection of its details. There may be geometric motifs employed in the architecture, with visual and sensory contrast to its surroundingsMysterious and enticing, but having a capacity of playfulness, this architecture may be controversial to some, but embraces it.

The building is eye-catching and playful in its design, having employed a geometric motif of a triangle with a rectangle combined.

The screen capture above shows the building in relation to its site, and it can be seen to be visually contrasting to the buildings around it. Being modern and dynamic in form, it may be controversial to some, but embraces this.

The experiential quality of being in the long open corridors as you travel across the bridge is unique, as the ceiling steps up and down in a playful manner.

Similarly in the floor below, the corridor is open to the outside, and creates a different experience, one that connects you with the outside minus the excessive glazing as seen in buildings of the International Style.

A simple and clear design for the lecture hall, yet the details are what make the space unique, with the vaulted ceiling and skylights changing the experience of the space.

A spacious workshop, the adjustable skylight changes the experience of the space, controlling the amount of natural light flooding into the space from the ceiling.

Floorplan and Spaces

Moving elements in the scheme

The first moving element is the walls that collapse down into the floor to connect the studio spaces and the workshop together to create a larger workshop/studio space. This allows for studios to have direct access to the workshop when a more hands-on studio class is necessary.

The second moving element is the adjustable skylight, where a large panel on the roof of the workshop is able to move and be adjusted to modify the amount of natural sunlight flooding into the space. This changes the experience of the space, and also means that possibly less power will be used to illuminate the space during the day.

The third and final moving elements are the sliding glass walls on the bridge. These close off the studio spaces and prevent people from crossing the bridge when closed, changing the circulation of the building/bridge. The circulation is changed as people coming from either the Squarehouse or Tyree building will have to travel down to the ground floor to travel across. These sliding glass walls will be used when there is a need for more privacy, or less distractions in the studio spaces, such as during assessments, important studio classes, or reviews.

Flythrough of scheme and spaces within

The above video is a flythrough of the final design that I have completed for my school of architecture at UNSW. This building acts as a bridge between the Squarehouse and the Tyree building, and includes the following spaces:

Lecture Hall
Studio Spaces
Workshop
Computer Labs
Library
Offices for Academic Staff
Offices for General Staff
Research Spaces for Academic Staff
Meeting Rooms for Students
Meeting Room for Staff
Gallery
Resting Spaces
Pantry
Male/Female Bathrooms

WEEK 12 - Independent Study // Feedback from other students

Feedback 1

General comments:

- Moving elements could be improved to serve more of a purpose
- The form of the building is good
- Textures are interesting

Feedback 2

General comments:

- Sketch perspectives are okay, but can possibly be improved
- Good use of spaces inside the building
- Mashup of three news articles is good and represents a solid theory

Animation of movement

The above video shows one of the moving elements that I will be incorporating into my design for this school of architecture. These walls will be dividing walls for studio spaces and the workshop, and by having the ability to lower these walls, the studio spaces and workshop can combine to become on large studio-workshop space when a more hands-on studio class is required.

Electroliquid aggregation concept:
Architecture inspires society through its events, actions and/or activities.

Relation to concept: The monumental, towering form of the structure can be seen from afar, and inspires society to travel, in its purpose of functioning as a light rail stop.

Relation to concept: The tall, open concourse space is a space for activity and this large open space inspires interaction between individuals.

Relation to concept: The multipurpose resting/study space above provides space for human interaction, and through this provides inspiration for interactions to take place within this smaller space.

WEEK 7 - Independent Study // 3D Model Progress - Sketchup + Themes considered in model explained

Model Progress - In Sketchup

Themes considered in model

One of the concepts that I have been developing towards is the concept of sustainability. I have approached this through several different ways, through using renewable energy (solar panels), and also passive design principles to minimise power usage in the light rail stop. The light rail stop consists of the actual platform/stop, and the concourse area/main space which leads up to a multipurpose resting/study space.

Double skin facade

This double skin facade allows for better ventilation through the building, reducing the need for artificial systems to maintain comfort inside, thus reducing power usage. Wind is able to enter through the holes in the front facade, and circulate into the building if the louvres in the inner facade are opened. During winter, these louvres can be shut to maintain warmth.

Louvres

There are louvres on both sides of the wall, and this allows for cross-ventilation through the space, cooling down the space during summer, and also minimising the need for artificial cooling. Similarly in winter, these can be shut to maintain warmth.

Vertical sun shades

These sun shades are on the main facade of the stop, and these redirect sunlight either away or into the building, and can be adjusted according to what is needed. They also help to block out much of the summer sun, while allowing in winter sun. This is another passive design feature which is implemented to maintain thermal comfort without the need for artificial systems which have high power consumption.

Solar panels/Skylights

These skylights are located on the rooftop of the stop, and on the back side of the skylights are solar panels. The skylights allow for natural light to flood into the space during daytime, minimising the need for artificial lighting thus reducing power usage. The solar panels face towards the sun for most of the day/afternoon, and this electricity generated is then used to power the whole stop. This means that if any artificial systems (cooling/heating and light) are required, especially during the night, there is a renewable power supply which can be used. Furthermore, the power generated from these panels may also be fed to the light rail, providing green energy and making it more sustainable.

Another concept considered

I have also considered a second concept in the design of my building, which is the multicultural students and teachers of UNSW. This is through the many public spaces where these students and teachers are able to interact, and connect with one another at this light rail stop.

Concourse Area

This is a large, concourse area where students and teachers of UNSW are able to meet up, or wait for the next train. The space is open, with a large space for people to congregate, and to interact. There are entrances on all four sides, with one of the entrances leading to the light rail platform. A large spiralling staircase sits in the center of the space, leading up to a multipurpose space above. This space is defined by the staircase in the middle, and also the four "industrial" looking main columns and rounded column facade outside. These columns were inspired by the architectural drawings of Chernikhov, where in his work this feature is prominent.

Multipurpose Space

Above the concourse is a multipurpose space which can be reconfigured to meet different needs. This space can be used for students and teachers to interact with one another, and also to study and work together. There are three smaller, more private rooms in the back, which can be used as study spaces. This multipurpose space has been considered carefully in its lighting, ventilation, and thermal comfort to minimise energy use through passive design strategies.
