Tasks Before First Class // Task 1: 3 Photographs

Task 1:
The first task we have been given to complete before the start of class is to post three images, and to write a paragraph beneath each of them telling us something interesting about them.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

a: your best piece of creative work before coming to this course, think laterally if you have not done "conventional" art or design work

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Prior to coming to university, I was still attending high school, and was studying the subject Design and Technology. In this class, I was lucky enough to have access to many technologies such as the 3D printer and the laser cutter. Below is my project from year 12 HSC Design and Technology. It was my major design project, which took up the whole year, with many design processes being undertaken.

I was required to use both CAD and CAM software in the design and development of the final product. It was printed out using a 3D printer and is a wrist support designed for people who suffer from RSI, or carpal tunnel syndrome. The purpose of the wrist support is to provide comfort, and to potentially reduce the impact that the medical condition has on doing certain tasks. This was a project that I enjoyed doing, despite the requirement for a 80 page portfolio documenting the process.

b: an image of a great piece of architecture

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Above is Frank Gehry's Walt Disney Concert Hall, opened in October 24, 2003. This is one of my favourite buildings because of the unique curves of the walls . The unique design of the building complements the overall function of the building, being a meeting point for showcases of creativity whether it be musical performances, or other types of performances in the concert hall.

As a pianist myself, I understand the need for a well-designed auditorium, as the way that the sound travels through the enclosed space will affect the overall quality of sound being reaching the ears of the listeners. The auditorium inside the Walt Disney Concert Hall exemplifies this - the carefully designed space was able to reveal mistakes in a musical score for the first time in decades where another auditorium could not. The orchestra has owned these scores for decades, but in the Chandler no conductor had ever heard the inner details well enough to notice the errors.

c: an original photograph of something beautiful

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Above is a photograph of something which I find beautiful. It is a photograph of a cafe latte which I had poured during my time working as a barista. This latte art is of a swan, and I find this to be beautiful because of the simple, clean lines which form the swan. I also enjoy making coffee and being a barista, and am passionate about it - the art of making coffee, I believe, is a beautiful thing.

From the selection of the specific coffee beans and their origins, whether it was a single origin bean or a blend of several, or the fineness of the grinding of the beans, the extraction of the espresso, the perfectly steamed milk with incorporated microfoam and pouring of the latte art, all these small steps make a big difference in how the final product turns out. It is this preciseness, this strive for perfection in every step that makes the art of making coffee beautiful.
